Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.
I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to write about my peculiar name.
My parent’s named me Allison at birth. My mom like Meghan and my Dad didn’t. I’m not sure why they went with the two-l version.
The name Allison is of Scottish and English origin, and it means “noble”. It is a gender-neutral name derived from the name Alice, which itself comes from the Old French name Aalis, a diminutive of Adelais, meaning “noble”. Allison – with two – ls a lot of people would argue, is the way you spell the last name version – ie: Allison transmissions.

I had been happily single in my later 20’s and it made my girlfriends uneasy. Solidly happy with my single first name. They were constantly trying to set me up on dates, one guy was missing a front tooth, and another was shorter than me – it had been rough. My close friend Veronica nagged me about it for a while and I finally told her to make the introduction. I did the minimum required and checked out his socials. That is when I learned that his last name was the same as my first, spelling and all.
He turned out to be a fantastic father and a great partner. Shortly after we married, I was updating my driver’s license and thought it would be clever to sign it Allison². I also thought for sure the DMV would not be having that. Turns out they don’t care. 😁 And that is how Allison Squared was officially born.
I never LOVED my name, like it is good and suits me, but then when it went to the next exponent it was amazing. I told my husband that if we don’t make it, I’m keeping the last name. I don’t think it will ever get old watching people realize why is happening, it’s funny – some laugh at me and not with me, but they just don’t get it. I love it. I don’t think there is any better name for me.
* I happen to be updating my drivers license tomorrow and I’m hoping they let me keep my signature. 🤞
